Crocodile's Hook

What Is It?

When I first took on the challenge of creating a custom breastplate and sword, I knew it would be a test of both my technical skill and my ability to deliver under pressure. The client needed the props ready to wear and tailored to their dimensions within a tight 30–60 day window

The breastplate required the most precision. I built the model around the client’s measurements, adjusting curvature, spacing, and panel depth so the armor would sit naturally on their torso.

With the models finalized, I moved into printing. This stage is always a balance of patience and precision. There were a few failed prints—there always are—but each one helped refine the settings until everything came out clean and consistent.

Challenges I had to navigate

Maintaining dimensional accuracy across multiple pieces so everything aligned perfectly during assembly.

Large print sections meant long print times and careful monitoring.

The Struggle

Throughout the project, I was challenged with making the armor from scratch and having to use a difficult and long winded technique to glue

Halfway through sanding, I realized one of the breastplate sections had a subtle but noticeable surface inconsistency. It wasn’t visible in the raw print, but once primed, it stood out like a spotlight.

I had two options:

  1. Ignore it and hope it wouldn’t be noticeable in the final paint job
  2. Strip it back, re‑sand, re‑prime, and lose a full day of progress

I chose the second option. It was the right call.

That extra work made the final finish flawless—and it reminded me why craftsmanship matters.

Final Takeaways

When everything was assembled, painted, and sealed, the transformation was incredible. The breastplate looked smooth, clean, and true to the Vinland Saga style. The sword had weight and presence without being cumbersome.

Most importantly, the client loved it—and it fit perfectly.

This project pushed my skills in modeling, printing, finishing, and time management. It reminded me how much I enjoy bringing fictional worlds into reality, one layer of filament at a time

What I learned

While some challenges proved incovenient. I was able to come out with a very good looking product that displayed great in all the photos. Some areas I needed to adjust in the future were keeping the sword together. The glue used for the metal support in the sword proved to not be the best. Gravity loosened some of the glue causing the metal support to unattached and freely move within the space in the sword. Further motion exasperated this destroyed other parts of the sword altogether.

Every build teaches something new. For this one, the biggest takeaways were:

Super proud of how it turned out and with further refinement was able to salvage the sword.
